Common Sense vs Godly Fear
Israel needs to keep fearing God so as to remain faithful to Him
1. The fear of God led the Gibeonites to make a treaty
– The Canaanite kings converge “as one to fight against Israel” (9:1-2)
– The Gibeonites “acted with cunning” to secure a peace treaty (9:3-13)
2. The fear of God would have led Israel to seek His counsel
– Israel “did not ask counsel from the LORD” & made the treaty (9:14-15)
– Israel became conscious they were deceived & made a blunder (9:16-18)
3. The fear of God led Joshua to keep his word
– Joshua & Israel confronted their mistake boldly & responsibly (9:19-27)
